The racers were chomping at the bit to get a chance to compete for top honors as Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, Nebraska held double features on Sunday, as a result of severe weather halting earlier scheduled IMCA racing action.
The veteran trio of Chad Dolan of Gibbon, Nebraska; Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa; and Jason Wilkinson of Neligh, Nebraska each picked up a pair of victories in their respective divisions on Sunday. Joining the trio on the podium in Feature makeup races were David Murray Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas and Grand Island, Nebraska’s David Dembowski.
Racing deep into the night was the name of the game for Jeremy Frenier to lead the most important lap of the night in the IMCA Modified Feature. Frenier of Ft. Morgan, Colorado drove past Jeremy Herbst on the final lap to claim the victory, after Herbst had led since the initial drop of the green flag. Herbst recovered quite nicely and finished second overall in the feature event. Conquering the dry slick race track to earn show honors from his third row starting position in the feature was Cozad, Nebraska hotshoe Cale Osborn. Rounding out your top five was Colton Osborn of Cozad and Jay Steffens of North Platte, Nebraska in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Wasting no time at all to get to the front, Chad Dolan of Gibbon worked the cushion and inside berm to near perfection to garner the lead from his fifth row starting position on lap six and never looked back in taking home the IMCA Northern Sport Modified Feature. Making an outstanding first impression during his debut of the 2013 season at Dawson County Raceway was Kyle Prauner of Battle Creek, Nebraska in second place overall. Veteran racer Bryan Herrick of Curtis, Nebraska tamed the oval in Lexington to earn third place accolades. Dean Wilkinson of Oakdale, Nebraska finished fourth after leading the initial five laps of the main event. Denny Egge of Kearney rounded out your top five finishers.
No stranger to the winners circle at Dawson County Raceway, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa drove away with the win in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Nichols piloted his new hot rod to the front on the fifth lap and never relinquished the lead. Coming from the middle of the pack, Jason Rogers of Selden, Kansas was able to work the wheel and gas pedal to conquer the dry slick track to finish second overall from his sixth row starting position. Maywood, Nebraska’s Casey Werkmeister collected show honors for his efforts. Coming from deep in the field of competitors Casey Woken of Ogallala, Nebraska and Jeff Whiting of Gothenburg were in fourth and fifth position when the final checkered flags were waved.
It was easier said than done, as Jason Wilkinson of Neligh was able to garner the lead on lap ten and lead the final five circuits to take the checkered flag in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Pacing the field from the onset was Sal Hernandez of Columbus, Nebraska. Hernandez was the leader until lap ten before relinquishing the point to Wilkinson. Sal recovered quite nicely to earn runner-up accolades. Working his way through the carnage and mishaps that occurred throughout the course of the feature Travis Kernick of Kearney, Nebraska finished third overall after starting the event in the ninth row. Wilcox wheelman Anthony Martin and Bertrand’s Ryan Gardine earned podium finishes in fourth and fifth place overall.
Making a stellar debut at Dawson County Raceway, Matt Ford of Grand Island took his Dodge Neon to the winners circle in the IMCA Sport Compacts Feature. Ford took the point on the fourth lap of the main event and never looked back. In his Yellow Rose, David Dembowski of Grand Island finished second after leading lap three. Rookie contender Jacob Olmstead of Overton, Nebraska was third overall after leading the first two laps of the main event.
