Sometimes when fate closes a door, it also opens a window. Such was the case two weeks ago for the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS).

When the Great American Dirt Track in Jetmore, Kan., was forced to cancel the remainder of the 2013 season recently, it left a void in the USMTS Casey’s Cup Series schedule on Thursday, June 20—the first of four straight nights of racing in Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma.

Enter promoter C. Ray Hall and the 81 Speedway, where the USMTS Modifieds last visited in 2008.

“We put in calls to about three or four tracks regarding the June 20 date, but there aren’t too many promoters who have the resources to plug in a new date on their schedule at the last minute,” said USMTS President Todd Staley. “81 Speedway is different though. C. Ray has been in the business a long time and understands what it takes to put on a good show. He’s got an established track and a loyal fan base, so we’re both confident the fans and drivers will come out and support this show just like last time.”

When the USMTS last visited the 81 Speedway on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, the largest crowd ever for a one-day USMTS event was on hand to watch Jason Hughes of Watts, Okla., pull off the win against a field of 59 competitors.

Although he led every lap of the 35-lapper, Hughes was shadowed throughout the event by Zack VanderBeek, then by five-time NCRA Modified Series champ Brian Franz, and then again by VanderBeek in the closing laps.

Built in 1954 on the outskirts of Wichita, the racetrack opened as Robbins Speedway and was a half-mile dirt oval. The speedway was sold in 1958 to Wichita businessman O.L. Douglas who changed the name to 81 Speedway.

Douglas kept the half-mile oval operating on Sunday nights for five years, then sold the speedway to Bill Hall. In 1971, he turned the daily operation of the speedway over to his son, Charles Ray Hall, known to most people as C. Ray.

C. Ray Hall is enjoying his 42nd year as the head man in charge of daily operations, and also manages the day-to-day happenings for his National Championship Racing Association (NCRA).

On Thursday, June 20, fans can expect to see the hottest open-wheel dirt Modified drivers in the nation circling the semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval, including defending event winner Hughes and current USMTS Arbor Masters Central Region points leader Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo.

Other USMTS drivers expected for this event include twin brothers Stormy Scott and Johnny Scott of Las Cruces, N.M.; two-time defending USMTS national champion Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa; nine-time USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa; Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa; Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas; Dereck Ramirez of Woodward, Okla.; 14-year-old rookie sensation Trevor Hunt of Kearney, Mo.; Canadian teammates Joey Galloway and Masen Big Eagle; Sooner State speedsters Thomas Tillison Jr. and Joe Duvall; area legend Rick Beebe of Shawnee and many more.

A tough contingent of local and regional aces will also have their eye on the $2,000 top prize, including current track and NCRA Modified Series points leader Marc Hurd, Dan Powers, Jason McGehee, Josh Lanterman, Kirby Robe, Tyler Davis, Joe Adams, Don Hodge, Brandon Miller and multi-time NCRA Modified Series champ Brian Franz

Gates will open at 5:30 with hot laps slated for 6:30 and racing at 7:30. Tickets are just $15 for spectators ages 11 and up, $5 for kids ages 6-10 and free for children under 6 years of age. Pit passes are $30.

The 81 Speedway is located north of Wichita on I-135 to exit 16, then 0.7 mile west on 77th St., and features Musco Sports Lighting and free camping (no hook-ups). For race day information, call the track hotline at (316) 755-1781 or visit www.81speedway.org online.

Another exciting night of racing action at Dodge City Raceway Park (DCRP) is on deck with Championship Chase Round Five set for Saturday night.

Round five of chase action at DCRP is this Saturday at 7:30 with IMCA Modifieds, United Wireless IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Thunder Cars on the 3/8-mile clay oval with the wild and crazy Hornets on the inner asphalt oval.

Through the opening four championship chase cards on the 3/8-mile clay oval, only Thunder Car competitor Tobby Schield has made a repeat visit to victory lane with 14 different winners in 15 features on the dirt track.

Championship point battles are tight in each division with more major shuffling among the point rankings inevitable after another torrid night of racing action on Saturday.

IMCA Modifieds:

Austin Allen holds a slim 10-point advantage over opening day winner Cody Gearhart with the rest of the top ten set up for another major shuffle with only 21 points separating the seven drivers ranked third through ninth.

Feature Winners: Austin Allen 1, Cody Gearhart 1, Brendon Gemmill 1, Troy Gemmill 1.

Current Top Ten in Points: 1. Austin Allen (Goddard, KS) 525, 2. Cody Gearhart (Turpin, OK) 515, 3. Beau Davis (Cheney, KS) 493, 4. Randy Wilson (Wichita, KS) 492, 5. Danny Keller (Dodge City, KS) 490, 6. Jesse Smith (Dodge City, KS) 489, 7. Jon Herring, Jr. (Woodward, OK) 482, 8. Kale Beavers (Pierceville, KS) 475, 9. Trenton Gray (Ulysses, KS) 472, 10. Ryan Heger (Hugoton, KS) 452.

United Wireless IMCA Sport Modifieds:

Jeff Kaup and Clay Sellard have both consistently finished near the front to set up a two-car duel for the title although Matthew Crowll and the Appels (Josh and Mike) are trying to stay within striking distance.

Feature Winners: Jeff Kaup 1, Clay Money 1, Clay Sellard 1, Austin Walker 1.

Current Top Ten in Points: 1. Jeff Kaup (Woodward, OK) 581, 2. Clay Sellard (Bucklin, KS) 568, 3. Matthew Crowell (Clearwater, KS) 540, 4. Josh Appel (Dodge City, KS) 514, 5. Mike Appel (Dodge City, KS) 506, 6. Toby Witthuhn (Garden City, KS) 490, 7. Colby Hagans (Utica, KS) 484, 8. Austin Walker (Utica, KS) 480, 9. Brian May (Spearville, KS) 474, 10. Adam Stenzel (Hays, KS) 457.

IMCA Stock Cars:

While he’s still looking for his first DCRP win of the year, Billy Phelps has opened up a 35-point advantage over Keith Riley.

Feature Winners: Ruben Eichman 1, Shannon Maughlin 1, Angel Munoz 1, Cody Zimmerman 1.

Current Top Ten in Points: 1. Billy Phelps (Mooreland, OK) 553, 2. Keith Riley (Larned, KS) 518, 3. (tie) Brett Copeland (Fowler, KS) and Mel Law (Dodge City, KS) 483, 5. Marlin Hogie (Ulysses, KS) 476, 6. Dusty Witthuhn (Bazine, KS) 460, 7. Justin Temaat (Dodge City, KS) 456, 8. Josh Crombie (Ness City, KS) 383, 9. Sonny O’Hair (Laverne, OK) 382, 10. Reagan Sellard (Bucklin, KS) 370.

Thunder Cars:

Dustin Walker emerged with the points lead after the third round of Thunder Car action, but not by much though as Tobby Schield is just five points back. Shield, the only driver to repeat atop the DCRP 3/8-mile clay oval thus far in 2013, is gunning for a third consecutive win on Saturday night.

Feature Winners: Tobby Schield 2, Scott Messino 1.

Tom Reed (Kalvesta, KS) 361.

Hornets:

After getting his win streak of three dating back to last year’s season finale snapped on May 11, Jarett Lunow got to work on a new one with his third win of the season last time out on June 1.

Feature Winners: Jarett Lunow 3, Gage Barton 1.

Current Top Ten in Points: 1. Jarett Lunow (Dodge City, KS) 591, 2. Brandon Bogner (Wright, KS) 566, 3. James Phelps (Mooreland, OK) 553, 4. Marci O’Hair (Laverne, OK) 543, 5.

I44 Riverside Speedway was hit very hard by an EF3 tornado. The tornado was about 1/4 to 1/2 mile wide as it hit the speedway. Promoters Mark Banister and Gloria Olexia also had their home completely destroyed a few miles east of the trackas the tornado intensified to an EF5. Gloria’s daughter was at the home when the two mile wide tornado hit, she was pulled from the wreckage very shaken, but unharmed. They finally found refuge late last night, but are reunited and safe.

The pictures posted of the devastation were taken as Greg Moore and other I44 Riverside patrons were the first to arrive at what was left of the track.

To everyone in the racing community – I44 Riverside will be back THIS SEASON. Cleanup will be a monumental effort, thank you to all who have volunteered to help – we will need it and more.

Details of the debris are visible in photos, but main grandstand is in a heap in the infield, score tower somehow still standing, but ruined. The pit grandstand is in a wooden heap in turn 3. Track access structures have all been leveled, but the concession stand survived. All of the track equipment was lost, the lighting, PA, electrical, even the flagstand all ruined. Unfortunately, all track equipment also lost as well.

I spoke with I44 Riverside Speedway Promoter Mark Banister late last night – and while everything was insured – we still have a cleanup on our hands unlike anything seen before in this region’s racing. With the support of the best teams and fans in the nation, as well as the leading motorsports outlets in the country, we can and will restore the only track in Oklahoma City so that we can put some happiness in hearts that today are so heavy. Together we will bring back and celebrate I44 Riverside Speedway.

But today is a time to grieve and pray for the victims of this horrific tragedy – for those who lost everything and those that lost even more. There are so many broken and heavy hearts, so many who are suffering – PLEASE do anything you can to help. The race track can wait, please do what you can for the families who are suffering. The following link contains detailed information on how you can help, please contribute in any way you can.

After the championship Finale was completed during the Saturday night portion of the “Modified Spring Scramble” back on April 6th during the National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas Presented by Precise Racing Products modified event at 81 Speedway in Park City, an incident occurred involving drivers Darren Moses and Tanner Mullens as well as crew member Buddy Mullens. Series president C Ray Hall officially announced on Monday the penalties for all three involved.

Tanner Mullens: Suspended two years by both the NCRA and Speedway Inc. for wrecking Moses after the races and for fighting.

Buddy Mullens: Suspended one year with the NCRA and Speedway Inc. hitting an official during the incident.

Darren Moses: No time line on how long he is suspended by both the NCRA and Speedway’s Inc. as he was previously in a earlier incident at Enid Speedway and the end of last year.

“The NCRA and Speedway’s Inc. will not tolerate such behavior at any of our events,” says Hall. “We understand that tempers will flare yet we have to have some common sense because things can get out of hand and somebody seriously hurt. Hopefully this will detour any other drivers or crew member doing anything like that in the future.”

Any further questions regarding this incident can be answered by calling the series and Speedway’s Inc. office (316) 755-1781.

Those in the IMCA Modified ranks will have a little extra in mind during Saturday night’s racing card at Dodge City Raceway Park.

While everyone will be gunning for victory lane in each of the five championship classes in action this Saturday night, those in the IMCA Modifieds will also use it as a last-chance tuneup for the upcoming special atop the 3/8-mile clay oval.

Following this Saturday’s championship chase action that includes IMCA Modifieds, United Wireless IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, Thunder Cars and Hornets, the next event looms large for the Modified ranks.

The track in southwest Kansas will offer up a two-night card on May 3-4 with a winner’s share of $1,200 on both nights for the IMCA Modifieds.

While each night’s winner pockets $1,200, the balance of the top five each night earns $800, $600, $550, $500 with $275 for tenth and $150 to start each main event.

Joining in on the action on both nights will be the United Wireless IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Thunder Cars.

While Ponca City, Oklahoma’s Brendon Gemmill is the two-time and reigning IMCA Modified champion, it’s Turpin, Oklahoma’s Cody Gearhart out to the track’s early championship points lead after winning the season opening event on March 30.

Racing action will get underway at 7:30 on both May 3 and May 4.

Tickets to both nights of racing action on May 3-4 will be just $15 for adults, with children 11 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Eighteen overall nights of action at Dodge City Raceway Park over the course of 2013 includes several special events including the TORC Off Road Trucks on April 12-13, the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars on July 5-6, a pair of $1,200-to-win IMCA Modified tilts on May 3-4 along with USAC Sprint Cars on August 23-24 and four rounds of URSS Sprint Car competition along the way.

Some things change. Some things don’t. Luke Cranston is hoping things change for him Friday night at Liberal Fairgrounds Speedway as the United Rebel Sprint Series kicks off the 2013 season with the inaugural Spring Thaw 305 Shootout in Liberal. Cranston has won 11 times in the URSS in the last few seasons, but he’s never really had much go his way at the D-shaped track in far southwest Kansas.

“I haven’t ran good there before,” Cranston said. “I really struggled there. I’m nervous about it, and Kirk (Reinert) is excited about it. We’ll see what happens.”

Friday’s races begin at 7 p.m., with pit gates opening at 4:30 p.m. It will be the ninth time the Rebels have competed on the Liberal track, with four different winners in those races (C.J. Johnson 4, Jason Martin 3, Taylor Velasquez 1 and Ray Seemann 1).

Seemann won the last race in Liberal for the Rebels in 2010. That was one of the first years Cranston competed in the series.

“We’re going to have to have everything put together this week,” Cranston said. “There’s going to be some good drivers there with Ty (Williams), Seemann, (Brian) Herbert, Jake Bubak and others. … It’s going to come down to Kirk getting the car set up and me getting into the car and driving it.”

Friday’s race features a $1,000 payout to the winner, and each driver making the A-main will receive at least $200. The race originally was scheduled for Beaver County Raceway in Beaver, Okla. But officials in the Beaver area wouldn’t allow the track access to enough water to provide a safe, clean racing surface. So promoter Glen Thompson moved the show to Liberal.

A year ago, Martin and Jeff Radcliffe won the first two nights of the Cow Chip Nationals in Beaver, with Radcliffe pocketing the $1,500 payout for the win on the second night. Radcliffe isn’t expected to compete Friday.

But that doesn’t mean the night will be lacking stars, especially with big money on the line.

Cranston is excited about his chance to race close to his home in southwest Kansas and in front of many of his sponsors. Plus, he’s ready to keep the momentum going from winning one of two events last Saturday night in Norton with the Heartland Sprint Series.

“We had a chance to run in Norton last week and got to blow the dust off of it,” he said. “We’ve got a new car and are trying some new things out.”

Veteran experience dominated the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series debut on Tuesday night at El Paso Speedway Park as Steve Kinser charged to his first victory of the season in the series debut at the West Texas venue.

Tony Stewart Racing teammates Kinser and Donny Schatz owned the front row for the feature, and Kinser never looked back. Kinser, the only touring Outlaw with experience on the 3/8-mile oval, quickly charged to the lead and pulled away while a wild race for second took place behind him. Points-leader Daryn Pittman was able to hold off Craig Dollansky for his 11th top-five finish of the year.

Quick-timer David Gravel and Kraig Kinser rounded out the top five.

“I was worried about everybody,” said Kinser, relieved to finally be in the win column for the 575th time in his World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series career. “The year hadn’t been going that great. It’s just good to get a win. We’ve been struggling to get a win and the whole team needed it.”

The general consensus among racers was that the track was solid and only getting better as the night progressed. “Still, you have to cowboy up,” said Gravel, “and you have to hit very precise marks.” That definitely benefitted Kinser, who has a knack for finding victory lane when the series debuts at a new venue.

To win, however, Kinser had to hold off a hard charge by Schatz who raced on Kinser’s bumper for half of the feature. Just after the halfway mark, however, Schatz pushed high in turn two and gave up second to Pittman.

“It was getting to be a pretty god race when Donny made that mistake down in one and two,” Pittman said. “The top four were pretty much all over each other.”

From that point on, the battle shifted to second and third between Pittman and Craig Dollansky.

“Hat’s off to my guys, we fought back,” Pittman added. “We thought we were having a motor going—it was just dying in the corner. This altitude we’re running at, it’s just not something we’ve done this year and it takes some getting used to … This is the first time we’ve have a streak like this but we are really enjoying it. We’re going to try to keep the top-five streak alive till November.”

This was Pittman’s eighth top-five in the past 12 races.

Dollansky finished third and Gravel held on for fourth.

“You can’t complain with top time and a new track record—and finishing in the top five. I just wish things had played our way a little different in the feature,” Gravel said. “I was just behind Daryn there, and I just didn’t get a good start on the restarts. And the car was never quite the same after that. If things had played a little differently, I would have been on the podium, but all in all it was a good night.”

Joey Saldana, Kerry Madsen, Schatz, Jason Sides, and Sammy Swindell finished sixth through 10th.

The biggest drama of the night was added by Cody Darrah, who took a huge tumble in turn two. “I just got myself tight coming off four and then got crossed up going into one. It was my fault, but we have some strong cars and I don’t have any lasting effects from the crash,” Darrah said.

The real winners may well have been the fans, however. El Paso Speedway was packed. “This is normally a Friday night track and we’ve never had this many people in the stands on a Friday,” said track owner Royal Jones, who also raced and wound up finishing 14th. “Just look at all the guys in the pits. They are excited.”

El Paso Speedway Park Notebook

NOTES – David Gravel set quick time in qualifying for the first time this season. … Donny Schatz claimed his third heat race win, Tim Kaeding his series-leading seventh and Craig Dollansky his third of the season. … The dash draw was a four for the first time this season. … Steve Kinser won the dash for the second time in 2013. … This was the first appearance in series history at El Paso Speedway Park.

TRACK RECORD – David Gravel drew first blood and scored a track record at El Paso Speedway Park. While that is not impressive by itself since this was a brand new track and the fastest qualifier was guaranteed to record that mark, what was remarkable was the fact that Gravel was the last driver of 21 cars to take time and the track had already lost some of its grip when he circled it.

Although the temperatures may not be cooperating, spring has arrived and it is once again race time for Lucas Cattle Company ULMA late models. The new season begins this Saturday, April 20 at Lucas Oil Speedway during the track’s first regular weekly race program of the year. This is the seventh straight year of competition for drivers at the track located, which is located in Wheatland, Missouri. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7, and racing at 7:30; for additional information visit www.lucasoilspeedway.com.

A stellar group of drivers are poised to begin their quest for the title including past champions and familiar faces. Jason Russell sets out to defend his title but there are plenty of other racers who have different things in mind; one of those being Quincy, Illinois driver Vance Wilson, the 2010 champion, who is looking for a return to victory lane. Tommy Cordray, Jeremy Kelley, Donnie Timmerman, Jon Binning, Lane Ehlert, Chris Lapp, Justin Russell, Chris Cox, R.D. Peterson, and Zeke Langley are just a few of the additional drivers among others who completed early season paperwork ready to hit the tracks.

Payton Looney, son of super late model driver Brad Looney, put his name in the hat for rookie of the year along with another second-generation driver, Dalton Imhoff, son of Walt Imhoff, a long-time ULMA competitor. Kenny Mudd, Steve Dieckmann, Jon Melloway, Bobby Penney, Bridget Clifford, and Greg Strong also enter the season with rookie of the year intentions. These drivers make up the largest rookie of the year contingent ULMA has witnessed since inception.

Lucas Oil Speedway, Callaway Raceway, and Randolph County raceway host ULMA competition this season along with Double XX Speedway in California, which has three ULMA races scheduled in the heat of summer. Visit www.callawayraceways.com for track information and event details for their opening night, which takes place on Friday, April 26. Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Missouri kicks off their season with ULMA competition on Saturday, May 11, visit www.randolphcountyraceway.com for details. Please note that mention of driver name does not guarantee race appearances at all sanctioned events.

This season all sanctioned tracks have implemented ULMA memberships. Beginning this weekend, drivers will show their membership license upon arrival. If licenses have not arrived in the mail by the start of each respective track’s season opener, ULMA officials will be on-site to provide license and registration paperwork, decals, and to answer questions. Drivers are encouraged to visit www.ulmaracing.com and click on the membership link to print and complete the 2013 form. In order to make opening night check in run as smooth as possible, ULMA asks drivers to complete paperwork prior to arrival.

This season marks the first year for ULMA to partner with Hoosier Tire Midwest. Drivers may purchase tires from ULMA throughout the season by contacting ULMA officials, the program benefits drivers at the end of the season during the October 19 championship banquet, which takes place in California, Missouri. Please visit www.racetires.com for additional information.

ULMA also welcomes the highly anticipated and much-appreciated return of FastShafts as a business partner. FastShafts is a division of Axle Exchange, Inc. and has produced drive shafts for Late Models, Modified, Stock Car, Dirt Truck, and Hobby Stock race cars since 1992. Axle Exchange, Inc. opened nearly 20 years ago as a constant velocity axle rebuilder. FastShafts offers carbon fiber, steel, aluminum, and chromoly drive shafts. Visit their website at www.fastshafts.com. FastShafts will provide one drive shaft to the ULMA champion and the season rookie of the year at the season-ending banquet.

Drivers earn championship points by keeping points earned from their 15 best race appearances throughout the season of the more than 50 possible scheduled race nights. To learn more about ULMA’s title sponsor visit www.lucascattlecompany.com. ULMA sincerely thanksFastShafts, RacingJunk.com, and PhotoGraphics by Shelly Payne for their support this season.
