After three straight rainouts, Anthony Madrid parked it in victory lane following the opening night Winter Challenge Series feature for IMCA Modifieds at Canyon Speedway Park.
Madrid raced to the $1,000 win, passing long-time leader William Gould on the 25th and final circuit. He took the checkers about half a car length ahead of Gould.
After starting ninth, Madrid fell back as far as 14th in the field of 22 before working his way back toward the front.
He restarted third following a caution with 10 laps left, was quickly into second and began challenging Gould for the lead.
With the white flag out, Gould got high on turn two. Madrid pulled ahead as the front pair drag raced down the backstretch, ducking low on the final turn and eking out the victory, his second of 2013.
“So far we’ve had a pretty good season,” said Madrid, already on the ballot for the 2013 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I raced side-by-side with Gould for most of 10 laps and we never touched once.”
Tim Ward climbed from 15th to capture the show position.
2012 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod national champion Jesse Sobbing was fourth with 2012 track points runner-up Jason Noll rounding out the top five.
Inclement weather forced cancellation of Jan. 25-27 Winter Challenge Series events. Canyon hosts three more dates, one on Feb. 1 and a pair on Feb. 2, before series action switches to Cocopah Speedway.
